Colosseo
Perhaps the most famous symbol of the most famous ancient imperial power is the Colosseum in Rome, Italy. The building is not only the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built, but it remains the largest extant standing amphitheatre in the modern world. Whilst the surviving Roman amphitheatres at Pula in Croatia and El-Djem in Tunisia are equally as impressive, Rome’s original version, completed by Titus Flavius Vespasian in AD80, draws the biggest crowds. The only palatable way of visiting is at daybreak, when the ancient arches and empty cobbles are illuminated by the rising sun.
